Call for Applications for NEST Doctoral Fellowships

Background
The Faculty of Social Science will provide up to four Doctoral Fellowships to exceptional PhD students whose research supports the mandate of the Network for Economic and Social Trends. This award will be valued at $20,000 per 12-month period for a maximum of two years, and will be subject to Faculty awards adjustments for external awards of similar value (i.e. SSHRC, NSERC). The awardees will be housed within NEST and benefit from the resources within the Network.
Eligibility
To hold the award, applicants must:
- Be fulltime in PhD year 3 or PhD year 4 within the Faculty of Social Science at the time the award is taken up
- Be on track to complete their dissertations by the end of Year 4
- Be conducting dissertation research that is directly related to the mandate of NEST
- Have completed all non-dissertation requirements for the PhD (including any required comprehensive examinations, and course work) by the time the award is taken up
- Have their thesis proposal approved by the time the award is taken up and be working full-time on their dissertation research during the tenure of the award
- Have at least an A average in courses taken in the previous 2 years
- Not hold any other major scholarships or fellowships (over $5,000)
- Not hold a TA, teaching, or other research position (GRA, GSA) during the tenure of the award
- Actively participate in NEST activities during the tenure of the award
Recipients of the NEST Doctoral Fellowship will have their funding packages adjusted as we do for other major scholarship awardees.
Application
Please submit applications as one single pdf to the Faculty’s Associate Dean Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by Ma 31, 2020. All applications should include the following components:
- Candidate’s name, contact information, program of study, year of study, supervisor
- Candidate’s academic transcript
- Candidate’s curriculum vitae
- Supervisor’s letter of support including how the student will benefit from this award and the timeline for completing the PhD
- Description of dissertation research, including:
- Title
- Maximum 100 word summary
- Relation of dissertation research to the NEST mandate
- Detailed description of dissertation research including
- objectives, scholarly and practical significance, methodology, and anticipated outputs and impact (maximum 3 pages)
- references (maximum 1 page)

Administration
- The NEST awards committee will adjudicate and announce the awards in April.
- Awards may be taken up Sept 1 in the year they are awarded
- Awards will be paid monthly
- Awards are taxable (T4A)
