“Navigating climate change, agriculture and masculinities
in Ghana and Nigeria”

Amanda OdoiDr. Odoi, a postdoc scholar, is examining masculinities, sexualities, and gender-based violence in Ghana. She explores and highlights the implications of social constructions, internalization and symbolism of these constructs and their performance for (development) interventions.

Holding a PhD in Development Studies with a major in masculinities from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, Odoi is currently a visiting Queen Elizabeth II Scholar and a WeCLISH Fellow at the Department of Geography and Environment, University of Western Ontario, researching climate change and masculinities.

Her research highlights the need to pay attention to (non-hegemonic) masculinities performances and related issues for gender equality and transformative climate change governance.

Rukayat SomoyeDr. Somoye, a passionate agronomist and researcher, is dedicated to promoting climate smart and sustainable agriculture in Nigeria.

Holding a PhD in Agriculture from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, Somoye has extensive experience in climate-smart farming practices and food security initiatives.

Her work focuses on integrating innovative solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change on agriculture.

Somoye has collaborated with various organizations, implementing successful projects that have improved crop yields and farmer livelihoods.

As a visiting Queen Elizabeth II Scholar and a promising entrepreneur of the Western Accelerator Fall 2024 cohort, her commitment to environmental sustainability and food security drives her ongoing research and advocacy efforts.

WeCLISH Climate Café’s Zoom room and connect over an insightful conversation with this month’s Café Guests: Dr. Amanda Odoi and Dr. Rukayat Somoye, the Queen Elizabeth II Scholars at Western.

They will share their research experiences navigating climate change in the Global South. Dr. Odoi will discuss the neglected masculinities in climate change gender equality discourse in Ghana. Next, Dr. Somoye will explore the profound impact of climate change on agriculture in Africa, especially Nigeria and present research-based innovative solutions, including recycling wastes to enhance food security and sustainability.
